Blacktown City Council is staging a community forum on February 17 to bring residents up to date about plans to build a large Energy from Waste incinerator at Eastern Creek.

The forum will be held from midday until 2pm on February 17 at Minchinbury Community Hall, 46 Minchin Drive, Minchinbury. There will be a free sausage sizzle.

Garbage disposal company Dial a Dump wants to build stage one of a two stage plant that will eventually burn more than a million tonnes of waste a year – across the M4 from Minchinbury at Eastern Creek.

“The NSW Government’s planning authority is giving Next Generation’s (TNG’s) energy from waste incinerator a third chance to meet the state’s mediocre pollution laws,” Blacktown City Mayor, Stephen Bali MP said.

Mayor Bali says his greatest concern is that the incinerator design has not changed, yet TNG keeps changing its predictions about how the incinerator will impact on the community.

“All they have done is changed the theoretical modelling that “predicts” the pollution levels.

“Nobody can actually say what the real outcome is going to be.

“All we are getting are different estimations, based on different modelling, prepared by someone who stands to make millions of dollars, who conveniently says we have nothing to worry about.

“Their first Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was knocked back, so they tweaked the modelling for a second EIS and now they have tweaked the modelling again in response to strong criticisms.

“In all this, the design plans for the machinery doing the burning have not changed.

“We now want to make sure the residents of western Sydney are up to date with what’s going on,” Mayor Bali said.

“TNG has changed their game plan, and is now seeking permission to build stage one of the plant, which will initially process around 500 thousand tonnes of waste.

“Stage One means they will want to build Stage Two, and this is the outcome we need to be wary of,” he said.

“I urge the community to come along to the forum for an update on the application process and letting The NSW Government – which is responsible for either approving or rejecting the project – know your opinion.
